The city is known as the "Sun City" for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is also referred to as the "Blue City" due to the blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort.

Balsamand Palace was Maharaja Sur Singh of Jodhpur as a summer pavilion. Similarly, Mandore was the capital of the ancient state of Marwar, before Jodhpur. Maharaja Jaswant Singh of Jodhpur got the Jaswant Sagar dam constructed. Like this almost every place around Jodhpur has a history attached to Jodhpur itself.

Welcom Heritage Khimsar Fort
This magnificent fort is literally off the beaten track. Set in the midst of sand dunes, this amazing fort stands as securely as it did over many centuries of battle and strife. The construction of the fort was begun in 1523 by Rao Karamsji, 8th son of the founder of Jodhpur Rao Jodha, who chose the spot of Khimsar, 90 km from Jodhpur where one brother resided and 150 km away from Bikaner, kingdom of another brother.
Twenty one generations later, a part of this fort is still residence to the Karamsot Rathor direct lineage while the rest has been opened out to royal Rajput hospitality, personally overseen by the family, on a grand and elegant scale.

Welcome Heritage Balsamand Lake Palace, Jodhpur
A mere 5 kilometers north of the city limits of Jodhpur, on the Mandore Road, is the Welcome Heritage Balsamand Lake Palace, overlooking the still and clear Balsamand Lake. Built in red sandstone and employing the typical ornate Rajput architectural style, it was initially conceived as the summer residence of the Jodhpur Maharajas.
The lake itself which was artificially created in the 13th century as a water reservoir that supplied drinking water to the city - now complements the lush green lawns and staggered terraced gardens of the property. The Palace was built, between 1928 and 1943, for H.H. Maharaja Umaid Singh ji, Grand Father of our present Maharaja, who had benevolently commissioned a new palace in 1923 to replace Mehrangarh Fort as the symbol of a new Jodhpur and to give employment to the people of Marwar during the period's great droughts and famines.
